Joseph William Turner
Was born in Maiden Lane, Covent Garden, London England In 23 April 1775, Died 19 December 1851 in London. He was an English romantic painter, perhaps the greatest 19th Century landscapist, whose expressionistic studies of light, color and atmosphere were unmatchable in their range and sublimity.
His marine paintings are particularly notable. From 1796 Turner began to exhibit oil paintings as well as watercolor at the Royal Academy. The first one, “ Fishermen at Sea,” is a moonlight scene and was acclaimed by a contemporary critic as the work “ of an original mind.“ He entered the Royal Academy of Art School in 1789, was only 14 years old, and was accepted into the Academy a year later, in 1802 he became a full Academician, as he grew older, Turner became more eccentric, he never married and had few close friends except for his father, his father’s death in 1829 had a profound effect on him, and thereafter he was subject to bouts of depression. Turner marked by a series of large pictures in which he emulated the achievement of the old masters.
